Today, we hear the call to evangelize: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” This is it — the Great Commission and the verse cited over and over again as the primary call we receive from Jesus to step out beyond the church walls and proclaim the Good News throughout the entire world. It all starts with the words Jesus speaks to us today: “Go and make disciples.”
We’ve spent weeks discussing what this looks like, what it means to “evangelize” or spread the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth. We’ve used words like: devoted, walk, name, works, and Spirit. And perhaps you’ve found these discussions and challenges fruitful! But this week, we shift things into a higher gear. This week, our word is GO.
If you have been taking part in these evangelization challenges (and if you continue them throughout your life!) a time may come when you perceive that a window has opened. You may feel the gentle but firm prompting of the Holy Spirit to act in that moment. And when that time comes, it’s your turn to “go” and share the Good News. But what does that mean? What does that look like for you? What exactly do we do in that moment? Watch this week’s video to learn more — and together let’s go out, St. Peter!
"Jesus approached and said to them, 'Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…'"
Matthew 28:18–19
1. How does it feel to hear Jesus give the Great Commission and the call to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:16–20)?
2. Why do you think it was important for Jesus to send his followers out to continue to proclaim the gospel?
3. How can you, with your unique gifts and talents and in your unique sphere of influence, proclaim the gospel with your life, words, and works?
4. What do you think about the idea that Jesus simply commands us to “go” and invite all to encounter him, not worrying about whether they respond yes or no? Does it change your perspective on evangelization at all?
5. If you were to share your story of how you know that God loves you, what would you say?
