We have spent this Easter season growing in awareness of what it means to evangelize. Are you feeling ready to answer this call? Remember that God does not call the equipped; God equips the called. You, by virtue of your Baptism, have undeniably been called to evangelize — but do you feel equipped yet?
On some level, we can all answer that question with a bit of a “no”. To go and evangelize the people in our lives is no easy task, and it seems to be getting more difficult with every passing day! But here’s the good news: we are not called to go alone. We have been given the Holy Spirit. He not only equips us with whatever we need (including the words to say!) but also lives within us and animates us from the inside out. Is there anything else we could possibly need?!
You may feel unprepared, hesitant, and even a bit nervous to take on the task of evangelization. That’s okay! In fact, perhaps that’s how you should feel. That vulnerability and weakness is precisely what can open you up to receive the Holy Spirit. God doesn’t reveal His glory in power. He reveals it in weakness — just like pure, molten gold that is poured into the fragile crack of a broken, ceramic vase. Allow yourself to be honest about where you are right now, and invite the Holy Spirit to take you to where you can be.
“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth…”
John 14:16–17
1. What do you think of when you hear Jesus describe the coming of the Holy Spirit in this week’s Gospel reading (John 14:15–21)?
2. In this week’s Second Reading (1 Peter 3:15–18), we are encouraged to “always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope”. If someone asked you why you follow Jesus, would you be ready with an answer? Why or why not?
3. In what ways do you maybe feel less-than-equipped to engage in the work of evangelization?
4. Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit to not only help us in our weakness, but to manifest his power precisely in our weakness. Have you ever had an experience of encountering the Holy Spirit?
5. How can you pray to be filled by the Holy Spirit this week?
