The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based method of religious formation designed for children as young as three. Its aim is to nurture the child's natural desire to know and love God. This desire for relationship is fed by God's gift of revelation through Scripture and Liturgy. Presentations follow the liturgical seasons.
CGS takes place in a carefully prepared room called the Atrium. The space is ordered, child-sized, and beautiful, allowing the children to interact directly and intensely with materials prepared by the catechist. In the course of a 3 year cycle, the catechist and children listen to Scripture about the person of Jesus including the infancy narratives and the narratives of the Last Supper, Easter, and Pentecost. They also listen to the parables of the Kingdom of God. The children are presented with materials that allow them to mediate, through the work of their hands, on each Scripture they have heard. There are also materials to increase understanding of and participation in the sacraments. These include a model altar and articles of the mass, a baptism corner, vestments of the priest, liturgical colors and calendar, and the gestures of the mass.
